HOW TO USE OUR LANDSCAPING MATERIALS

There are many proven ways to apply landscaping materials and most of them work to some degree.  The following tips will help you get great results using our range of quality REALISTIC SCATTER MATERIAL.

STEP 1

Apply a base colour to simulate soil.  We actually use real soil for our scenery.  Brush on PVA glue diluted approx 50/50 with water onto your scenery base.  Now sift or sprinkle your soil over the wet glue.  Just enough to cover the baseboard is all that is required.  There is no need to remove excess soil...just don't over apply!

Another option is to simply paint a suitable soil colour.

MALLEE - NATURAL can also be applied at this stage to look like soil rather than using real soil.

STEP 2

Now you are ready to start applying

  REALISTIC SCATTER MATERIAL.

Lightly sprinkle the scatter by finger tips or through a small sieve onto your soil base.  Apply a little MALLEE - NATURAL scatter first to simulate older dry grass then move onto applying MALLEE - MEDIUM GREEN.  Now add highlights of MALLEE - LIGHT GREEN.  In lower areas such as ditches, drains or where water would lay add MALLEE - DARK GREEN to simulate a more lush environment.

REMEMBER! - Apply only small quantities.  You can always add more if needed later.

Step back and check your results.  If you are now happy with what you see move onto the next step.

STEP 3 Now is the time to lock the scenery in place.  Using a water misting bottle add 90% water and 10% methylated spirits.  100% water can be used with a few drops of detergent but trust us...the methylated spirits mix works better.  What you have made is generally referred to as WET WATER....meaning it penetrates extremely well.  Stand back and set the nozzle to mist over the entire scenery with your wet water.  Keep spraying onto the scenery so that the top surface is just evenly wet.  DON'T SATURATE...YET!!
STEP 4 Now mix PVA glue and water at a ratio of... WATER 8:1 PVA.  This is now your scenery fixative.  Using a spray misting bottle again spray this over your entire scenery until it is ALMOST to the stage of saturation.  If saturated it can cause the scatter and other scenery details to float away excessively.  Now allow all this glue to dry.  Drying time will depend on factors such as weather and amount of glue applied.  Directly after this glue application stage we like to apply just a hint of real soil back over the scenery in patches.  The effect this makes is amazing and really makes the difference.  We use a slightly different soil colour to the base soil we applied first.  Usually SOIL - RED SAND is our preference but it will depend on the location you are modelling.
STEP 5

Once your scenery is dry you can check to see if its adequately glued.  If you find that the scatter is still loose you just need to follow step 4 again and gradually build up the applications of glue.

REMEMBER - YOU DON'T NEED YOUR SCENERY TO WITHSTAND A CYCLONE!

USE JUST ENOUGH GLUE TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.

Excess quantities of glue will tend to darken your scenery and make it look unrealistic.

STEP 6

Now add your other scenery details like weeds, bushes and trees.  If at any time you think you need a little more scatter or soil in any place...simply add it right on top of your previous work then go through steps 3 & 4 again.  ITS THAT SIMPLE!!  We even completely fix all our bushes and trees on the whole scenery with steps 3 & 4.  It really helps to keep all the colours uniform.
